We had a great trip with Marcos. We went to the Arrocampo on a bird watching tour. We were able to see many waterbirds, amongst many the purper heron, the squacco heron, the black crowned night heron, the little bittern... And many, many more. Marcos surprised us with a report after the trip listing all the birds we've seen. Also he treated us with a nice local lunch during the tour. All in all: we enjoyed the trip and the knowledge and company of Marcos. HIGHLY RECOMMEMDED!

Gracias

Marcos gave us the tour in English and we have no problems understanding him. He has good equipment to observe the wildlife. He is very knowledgeable and you can see he enjoys giving these tours. Definitely worthy. Some spots could get busy, you might want to book outside of weekends/bank holidays. It was great overall!

Birding in Extremadura: Ornithological routes in the plains of Cáceres and Trujillo

The Plains of Cáceres and Trujillo are one of the best destinations for birdwatching in Spain. This extensive landscape of pastures, meadows and dry crops is home to a great diversity of steppe birds, some of which are endangered. If you are passionate about birding in Extremadura, here you will find a true paradise for ornithology, with the possibility of spotting unique species in the company of expert local guides.

Our tour is private, which means you won't be sharing the vehicle with other groups. You'll enjoy an exclusive experience, with total comfort and flexibility to adapt the tour to your interests and pace of observation.

Steppe Birds and Raptors: Ornithological Treasures of the Llanos

In this privileged enclave it is possible to spot a great variety of species adapted to open environments, including:

  • Great Bustard (Otis tarda), symbol of the Iberian steppes and one of the most sought-after birds by observers.
  • Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax), whose population is declining throughout Europe.
  • Pin-tailed sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata) and black-bellied sandgrouse (Pterocles orientalis), birds fascinating for their camouflage ability.
  • Stone Curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus), easily recognizable by its large yellow eyes.
  • Lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni), with important colonies in Trujillo and Cáceres.
  • Calandra lark (Melanocorypha calandra) or Thekla´s lark (Galerida theklae), species of larks characteristic of the area.

In addition, the presence of small rocks and cliffs allows for the existence of a notable community of birds of prey:

  • Spanish eagle (Aquila adalberti), an endangered species that finds refuge in the nearby mountain ranges.
  • Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), great hunter of these plains.
  • Black vulture (Aegypius monachus) and griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), which can be seen hovering in search of carrion.
  • Red kite (Milvus milvus) and black kite (Milvus migrans), two migratory species present at different times of the year.

The ornithological wealth of the area is complemented by aquatic birds in the nearby wetlands, such as the Talaván Reservoir or the Alcollarín Reservoir, where it is possible to observe species such as the purple heron or the black stork.

Protection and Conservation: A Key Natural Space

The Llanos de Cáceres and Trujillo are included in the Natura 2000 Network, an ecological network of protected areas at European level that guarantees the conservation of habitats and species of community interest. Specifically, this area has several protection figures:

  • Llanos de Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA): Designated by the European Union to preserve steppe species and their habitats.
  • Llanos de Cáceres Site of Community Importance (SCI): Included in the Habitats Directive for its ecological value.
  • Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve: Although it is not directly part of the plains, its proximity reinforces the ecological connectivity of the region.
  • Monfragüe National Park and ZEPA Monfragüe y Dehesas del Entorno: Located less than an hour away, these areas are essential for the conservation of large birds of prey and forest birds.
  • ZEPA Embalse de Arrocampo: A strategic enclave for the observation of aquatic birds, where species such as the bittern and the purple swamphen can be seen.

Thanks to these protective measures, the surroundings of the Llanos de Cáceres and Trujillo continue to be a vital refuge for biodiversity and a privileged destination for birding in Extremadura.
