Birding Arrocampo

The Arrocampo reservoir is a wetland with exceptional water level and temperature conditions that make it the perfect place to observe a multitude of water birds all year round.

Arrocampo Birds and Flagship Species

Arrocampo stands out for its exceptional diversity of wetland birds, many of which are difficult to observe in other parts of the region. During our guided birdwatching toursyou will be able to spot:

  • Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), hiding among the reeds.
  • Night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), active at dusk and easily recognisable by its two-coloured plumage.
  • Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides), a migratory species that breeds in these wetlands.
  • Booted eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus) and short toed eagle (Circaetus gallicus), birds of prey present in the surrounding dehesas.
  • Black stork (Ciconia nigra)more elusive than its relative the white stork.
  • Glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), a dark-coloured ibis that has become established in the area in recent years.
  • Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), perfect examples of waterbirds adapted to these wetlands.
  • Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), with a breeding colony in the village church, where it is possible to observe its frenetic flight in spring.
