Walking routes to natural pools and waterholes in the Jerte Valley

Hiking, swimming and nature with a purpose

The Jerte Valley, known for its spectacular cherry blossom in spring, is also a real a haven of water and coolness in summer. The surrounding mountains are criss-crossed by rivers and gorges which, as they wind their way down the slopes, have gradually carved out natural pools and waterholes ideal for swimming. A perfect setting for those looking to escape the heat, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy nature at its wildest.

During our Walking routes to the natural pools and waterholes of the Jerte Valley We’ll guide you along mountain trails to some of the most beautiful and refreshing spots in the region. We’ll walk through oak and chestnut groves, learning about the landscape, its biodiversity and its history, until we reach natural swimming spots where the clear water invites you to take a dip.

The most spectacular natural pools in the Jerte Valley

Below, we present some of the natural pools that we explore on our walks. Some are very well known, whilst others remain somewhat more hidden away, but what they all have in common is their beauty, their natural origins and the stunning surroundings in which they are set:

🌊 Los Pilones (Garganta de los Infiernos)

Without a doubt, the valley’s most iconic natural swimming pool. Situated within the Reserva Natural de la Garganta de los Infiernos, this series of giant potholes carved into the rock by the action of water over thousands of years is one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Extremadura. The water forms natural slides and deep pools that are ideal for swimming, though caution is always advised. Although it is a very popular spot, we explore it at quieter times, taking a respectful and guided approach.

💧 La Garganta de las Nogaleas (Navaconcejo)

A beautiful route through waterfalls and shady spots, leading to several pools that are ideal for a dip. It is one of the most photogenic trails in the valley, where water is ever-present at every turn. The natural pools in this area are slightly less well-known than Los Pilones, which means you can enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere, especially during the week.

🌿 Charcón de las Majaillas y Charco de la Rehata

On our lesser-known routes, we’ll take you to places such as Charcón de las Majaillas, a large, peaceful pool surrounded by greenery, ideal for those looking to swim in the heart of nature without the crowds. Or as Charco de la Rehata, a pool of clear water that appears at the end of a mid-mountain trail, perfect for a refreshing dip. These are little-visited areas, where it is easier to connect with the surroundings and enjoy the silence of the forest and the coolness of the water, always with respect for the environment and in a sustainable manner.

Sustainable tourism in its purest form

All our routes follow an approach based on sustainable tourism and ecotourism. We promote responsible use of the natural environment, avoiding overcrowding, respecting the flora and fauna, and encouraging eco-friendly swimming practices (no chemical sun creams, no soap in the water, no littering).

Walking is the best way to reach these bathing spots without damaging the environment. Not only do we reduce our environmental impact, but we also enhance the experience: we reach places free from cars and noise, accompanied by a guide who explains the landscape and conveys the ecological and cultural value of the area.

What’s more, we choose routes to suit different levels, from short walks for families with children to more challenging trails for those looking for a more adventurous experience.
